Our fourth spirit tasting event was a definite hit. Featured was
Hochstadter’s Slow & Low, a rye whiskey Old Fashioned in a bottle, inspired of course by rock and rye. A local representative from parent company Cooper Spirits,based out of Philadelphia, was on hand as well. Cory Farrow Semiwowicz spoke about the history of the company and shared stories about the featured cocktail.
She explained that Slow & Low is made with 100% raw honey from Pennsylvania, navel oranges from Florida, Angostura-style cocktail bitters and just a pinch of rock candy. Cory also brought some swag with her: stickers, very cool patches, hats (that even I would wear!) and some nifty bags.
Joe also shared some knowledge. He explained how rye was first thought to be a weed when it was first discovered in barley crops. Rock and Rye became a style of whiskey during the time of Prohibition. The featured cocktail was The Philly Mule which Joe created exclusively for this event but is now included on our regular menu.
Twenty guests enjoyed the evening. In review, the drinks served included:
Guinness Rye Pale Ale Bottle Beer
Straight Rye Whiskey 2oz
Hochstadters Straight Rye Whiskey 2oz (this was also added to our cocktail menu)
Slow & Low Rye Whiskey 2oz
Crème Yvette 2oz as a dessert drink.
The Featured cocktail was The Philly Mule, consisting of:
2oz Slow & Low
4oz Barritts Ginger Beer
