Vodka the White Bread of Liquor

We had a terrific gathering the other night sampling three great Vodkas.  Seventeen folks in all were present as “Joe the Bartender” gave us the history of all three drinks from the oldest, Stoli, then Ketel One, to the newest, Titos, a product from the 1980’s.

I think most found the Stoli Vodka to be the best tasting drink.  Also, Joe “shook up” the signature cocktail and let the attendees select their own preference, of the three drinks, and also their own Vodka cocktail.

Just to name a few orders, we saw Vodka Gimlet, Cranberry and Vodka, Martini, Vodka Collins, and my own favorite, Vodka and Tonic.

It was exciting to see that a few people purchased advance tickets for the next event as a holiday gift idea. And, we also held a drawing for two free passes for the next event!

Our next event is 12/13 @ 7:30 in the evening.  Topic for discussion:  after dinner dessert drinks, Cordials.  Hope to see you there!

Happy Thanksgiving from the Coach House .

When this time of the year comes around and as folks start to think about their holiday plans, we also at the Coach House start to focus on our 77 year old holiday traditions.

Thanksgiving, when family and friends come together and enjoy.  There is food and drinks, turkey with all the fixings, pumpkin pies of course, good conversation, and a football game or two.

The Pappas family has served patrons every Thanksgiving for the past 77 years.  If you are keeping track, that would include the last eighteen presidents!  In other words, we love taking care of your family.  It is an honor to spend such a special holiday together.

Join us and experience what residents of North Bergen, Union City, and Jersey City already know.  That in addition to a terrific Thanksgiving dinner, we also have delicious desserts.  We have pies and cakes that rival your great Grandmother’s recipes and our cheesecakes might just be the best on this side of the Hudson.

Early reservations for Thanksgiving are suggested as we do expect a full “Coach” house.  You can also reserve your dessert (yes they are that good) by calling or stopping in the restaurant.  Remember you are always welcome at The Coach House.  Call us any time at 201-864-8600 . Holiday Menu

Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving!

Coach House Spirits Tasting Series, featuring “Joe the Bartender.”

Our fourth spirit tasting event was a definite hit. Featured was
Hochstadter’s Slow & Low, a rye whiskey Old Fashioned in a bottle, inspired of course by rock and rye. A local representative from parent company Cooper Spirits, based out of Philadelphia, was on hand as well. Cory Farrow Semiwowicz spoke about the history of the company and shared stories about the featured cocktail.

She explained that Slow & Low is made with 100% raw honey from Pennsylvania, navel oranges from Florida, Angostura-style cocktail bitters and just a pinch of rock candy. Cory also brought some swag with her: stickers, very cool patches, hats (that even I would wear!) and some nifty bags.

Joe also shared some knowledge. He explained how rye was first thought to be a weed when it was first discovered in barley crops. Rock and Rye became a style of whiskey during the time of Prohibition. The featured cocktail was The Philly Mule which Joe created exclusively for this event but is now included on our regular menu.

Twenty guests enjoyed the evening. In review, the drinks served included:

Guinness Rye Pale Ale Bottle Beer
Straight Rye Whiskey 2oz
Hochstadters Straight Rye Whiskey 2oz (this was also added to our cocktail menu)
Slow & Low Rye Whiskey 2oz
Crème Yvette 2oz as a dessert drink.

The Featured cocktail was The Philly Mule, consisting of:
2oz Slow & Low
4oz Barritts Ginger Beer
Orange Wheel

If you missed the evening of fun, not to worry because our next event is 11/29/16 and Vodka will be featured.
Plan accordingly as several folks have already bought tickets! See you then.

Breakfast really IS the most important meal of the day.

George Shahbazian

Meet George Shahbazian.

Meet George Shahbazian.  Incredibly, he has been coming to the Coach House Diner for the past 57 years!  Along with his son, they are regulars every Saturday morning at 7 a.m. for breakfast at the CH.

George was a local sports coach for 67 years.  That’s a ton of tehnical fouls, but even more smiles as he always enjoyed teaching the kids.

George called Union City home for 35 years, but retired now he lives Secaucus NJ.  So the next time you stop in at the Coach House Diner for a bite you just might be lucky enough to run into Mr. Shahbazian.
